Trauma therapy using EMDR
to heal the soul
My name is Jodi Willems and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor of Mental Health, licensed in both Delaware and Maryland. I see clients in-person at my office in Newark, DE. Although I offer teletherapy sessions, I find that the in-person setting is much more beneficial for the therapeutic process. For those clients wishing to do EMDR therapy, I only do EMDR in person.
My practice is based on emotional healing and helping clients to feel safe. The therapeutic relationship is based on mutual trust and I work to gain your trust so that we can address the issues that brought you to therapy. I work from a person-centered, holistic approach and will treat you as an individual, respecting your unique life story and experiences. Our focus will be to work towards the goals you feel are important in your life. I value your participation in therapy because this is an integral part of healing the soul.
My experience has taught me that I must be authentic with you in order to gain your trust. I will accept you unconditionally and value you as a human being. I will create an atmosphere of empathic understanding so that I might best understand your unique life experience and provide you with the best possible therapeutic experience.
My work encompasses many areas including anxiety/stress, depression, grief, codependency, substance use, and trauma. I am certified in EMDR by the EMDRIA International Association. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Therapy) can be an effective intervention and approach to therapy that can assist clients who are experiencing symptoms of trauma.
Depending on your current health insurance provider or employee benefit plan, it is possible for services to be covered in full or in part. Please contact your provider to verify how your plan compensates you for psychotherapy services.
I’d recommend asking these questions to your insurance provider to help determine your benefits:

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an integrative psychotherapy approach that has been extensively researched and proven effective for the treatment of trauma. EMDR is a set of standardized protocols that incorporates elements from different treatment approaches.
EMDR therapy is an integrative psychotherapy method that uses a technique called bilateral stimulation to repeatedly activate opposite sides of the brain. Therapists often use eye movements to facilitate bilateral stimulation. These eye movements mimic the period of sleep referred to as rapid eye movement or REM sleep, and this portion of sleep is frequently considered to be the time when the mind processes the recent events in the person’s life.
EMDR seems to help the brain reprocess the trapped memories in such a way that normal information processing is resumed. Therapists often use EMDR to help clients uncover and process beliefs that developed as the result of relational traumas, or childhood abuse and/or neglect. For a more detailed explanation please visit the EMDR Institute, Inc.
EMDR had been originally established as helpful for PTSD, although it’s been proven useful for treatment in the following conditions:
Do you experience distressing emotions that appear to you, and perhaps to others, to be excessive given the current situation? Do you tend to be highly reactive to certain triggers? Is there one or more dysfunctional beliefs that you believe about yourself that on an intellectual level you know is not true?
If so, you may still be a good candidate for EMDR therapy. Contact me today for a free phone consultation to see if EMDR might help you release what no longer serves you.
